In just over a decade, Josh Schuster has established himself as a standout among the next generation of real estate professionals.
The founding of Silverback Development in 2016 marked the beginning of a new chapter for the New York City-based executive, who has a proven track record of delivering successful, high-profile projects to market. Having closed more than $1 billion in real estate deals by the age of 32, Josh spearheads Silverback’s commitment to delivering projects that enhance neighborhoods by pushing the boundaries of design.
As former principal of DHA Capital, Josh sourced and led the development of many noteworthy luxury residential developments in New York City, including 50 Clinton Street, 535 West 43rd Street and 12 East 13th Street. Additionally, he acquired 75 Kenmare in the city’s Nolita neighborhood, and commissioned celebrity interior designer Lenny Kravitz to design the building’s residences.
Prior to his time at DHA, Josh served as director of development at JMH Development, where he was responsible for the trailblazing luxury renovation of 184 Kent Avenue, one of the first and most successful rental conversions in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Josh is founder and chairman of the Bicol Clinic Foundation, a non-profit organization that builds clinics that provide free medical care in developing countries. A graduate of Tulane University, Josh is the youngest board member of the Baruch College Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute. He is also a member of the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association, Urban Land Institute and the New York Private Equity Network.
Jordan Tolman is a Principal at Silverback Development, and serves as a member of the Executive Investment Committee. Mr. Tolman brings years of experience in real estate and construction law and operations.Prior to joining Silverback Development, Mr. Tolman was a partner at the law firm of Levy Tolman LLP, representing multi-family and commercial building owners and developers. Prior to that position, Mr. Tolman was a partner at the law firm Tolman Smyth LLP.Prior to those positions, Mr. Tolman served as Associate General Counsel at Stonehenge NYC, an owner and operator of a portfolio of properties in New York City.Mr. Tolman received a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and a Juris Doctor degree from the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.
Bruce brings over 33 years real estate development experience to his role as chief operating officer. He joined Cappelli Enterprises in 1999 as executive vice president and was on the firm’s executive team responsible for the acquisition, approvals, development and marketing of mixed-use, office, residential and retail developments. Prior to joining Cappelli Enterprises, Bruce was involved in corporate real estate development and construction as director of market development for AMF Bowling, Inc., director of development for Disney Development Company and project manager for Xerox Realty Corporation. During his career, Bruce has been engaged in all aspects of real estate development and construction. Notable projects include the White Plains City Center, a $500M, $1.3M SF mixed-use project, the Ritz Carlton Hotel and Residences in White Plains, a $750M, 950,000 SF mixed-use hotel/condo/office project, Disney Studios Masterplan, a 2,000,000 SF office/soundstage/back-of-house project, two 1,000,000 SF office parks for Xerox and a $600M proposed mixed-use center known as the Burbank Entertainment Center for the Walt Disney Company.
Bruce holds a BA from Trinity College and an MBA from Columbia University Graduate School of Business.
Mr. Scully has more than 32 years of real estate acquisition and development experience encompassing multiple property types.
From 2014 through 2018 Mr. Scully was Managing Director, US Acquisitions for Asia Pacific Land (“APL”), responsible for sourcing, evaluating and negotiating equity and hybrid debt investments in larger projects in major US markets. APL is a Hong Kong-based investment platform founded by American professionals. It currently manages $5BB+ in assets in several Asian markets. APL established its US office in late 2015 and has been reviewing opportunities in New York, Washington D.C., Boston, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Mr. Scully was APL’s first institutional equity investor while a Partner at Apollo in the late 1990s.
From 2011 to 2014 Mr. Scully pursued development projects for his own account, primarily in New York. He structured and closed a $160MM, 280 unit new-build apartment project on the west side of Manhattan in partnership with the Patrinely Group, a former client, and USAA Real Estate Company, the majority equity partner. The project was completed in 2015.
From 2005 through 2010 Mr. Scully served as a Managing Director at Cerberus Real Estate Capital Management, which managed a series of closed ended funds with approximately $3BB in AUM. He was responsible for identifying, underwriting, and structuring new investments. He spent a significant amount of his time overseeing the US operations of a Cerberus portfolio company (Kyoya Ltd.) which owned 5,700 hotel rooms in eight assets located in Hawaii, San Francisco and Orlando, FL. He served as in-house developer for five major redevelopment projects within the Kyoya portfolio conducting initial analyses, coordinating with design professionals and directing entitlement efforts for residential/hospitality development/redevelopment projects with an expected cost of $2BB and expected value in excess of $3BB.
Mr. Scully was a partner at Apollo Real Estate Advisors from 1996-2004, where he was responsible for sourcing and negotiating investment opportunities for a series of institutional equity funds sponsored by the firm (total AUM approx. $4BB). He established operating partnerships in office, retail, MF, and industrial investment in various markets.
From 1994-1996, Mr. Scully was associated with O’Connor Capital Partners, the General Partner of the Argo Funds, institutional real estate equity funds co-sponsored by O’Connor and JP Morgan ($425MM AUM). Mr. Scully was Director of Acquisitions for the Funds.
Before joining O’Connor, Mr. Scully was affiliated with a land development fund sponsored by The Carlyle Group and Clark Construction. He also worked at GE Capital from 1990-1993 during the early stages of the RTC/FDIC workout process, evaluating portfolio acquisitions for GE’s Portfolio Acquisitions and Business Ventures Group.
From 1988 through 1991 Mr. Scully was a Development Director with The Linpro Company, a national development, firm where he was responsible for multifamily and commercial projects in Maryland and The District of Columbia.
From 1983-1986, Mr. Scully worked as an appraiser/market analyst for Landauer Associates.
Mr. Scully received a Bachelor of Arts from Dartmouth College in 1983 and a Master’s in Business Administration in real estate finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1988.
With nearly 40 years of construction and management experience, Jay Jameson’s extensive work in the industry is unparalleled. Serving as Executive Vice President and Director of Design & Construction for Silverback, Jay has served as a Project Executive, Owner’s Representative and Project Director for large-scale commercial, institutional, mixed-use residential and hotel construction projects all over the world. Overseeing the construction of millions of square feet, some of his major projects include a 300-unit residential rental building near Hudson Yard, a 190-unit residential building in the West Village, a 6,000-unit mix residential project in the Middle East, the Plaza Hotel condominium conversion, renovation of the Chase Manhattan Bank in NYC, and the construction of American Express Co Canadian Headquarters in Ontario. Jay's attention to detail and precision make him one of the best in the industry.
Jay holds a Bachelor of Science in Architecture &Technology from New York Institute of Technology and a Master of Science in Construction Management from Stevens Institute of Technology.
Jay is an avid golfer, and volunteer’s his time with several charitable organizations such as The First Tee, St. Judes Hospital for Children’s Cancer Research, and Shriner’s Hospital for Children
Alan Glick brings almost ten years of institutional real estate experience to Silverback. Alan joined Silverback from Equity Residential, an S&P 500 company (NYSE: EQR), where he was involved in acquisitions, development and asset management of the company’s multi-billion dollar East Coast portfolio. Prior to EQR, Alan was a member of the real estate team at Alvarez & Marsal, a leading international financial services firm recognized for turn-around and restructuring services. While at A&M, Alan advised high-profile real estate investors and lenders through distressed situations and complex transactions. Alan was also an Analyst at Lehman Brothers, where he supported the restructuring and reorganization of the investment bank. Alan holds a B.S. in Finance from the George Washington University. He is board member at the GW Center for Real Estate and Urban Analysis and actively mentors students interested in real estate and supports GWU’s real estate programming.
Joseph Piraino brings over 11 years of experience to Silverback. Joseph is committed to delivering high quality, value, and beauty to the projects in which he is currently overseeing. This passion for the industry has been fueled by mentorship and having worked with some of the brightest and most sought-after talent in Real Estate. Joseph has worked in several aspects of real estate and investment banking having collaborated on many large-scale projects across the United States and abroad. In this capacity, Joseph has secured financing and capital allocations for the acquisition, development, and restructuring of properties totaling over $2 Billion USD. In addition, he has been intimately involved in the acquisition and development of over 2,000,000 square feet of development projects globally. Today, Joseph and his team have become one of the most recognizable full-service development companies in the city and across the United States. Joseph is active in philanthropy, supporting education, medical research, and human rights causes. Whether in business or in charity, he has always committed to tackle big problems and find transformative solutions by creating an environment where as a collective there is a defined spirit for learning and growth. Always dedicated to providing the resources needed to maximize the teams talent. Starting his career at Sterne Agee Joseph has held (FINRA) Series 7, 63 licenses. He has since served in senior-level positions at HKS Capital Partners, Gemini Real Estate Advisors, and Bizzi & Partners Development.
A native New Yorker, he is a graduate of St. John’s University where he earned a BS in Finance and BA in Political Science and Government. He currently co-chairs the SJU CRE Alumni Association and has attended New York University where he earned an MS in Real Estate Development.
Shannon Chang leads business development and capital markets at Silverback. She is skilled in cultivating relationships with investors, including family offices and large institutions and has an innate ability to communicate strategy, performance and competitive edge. In addition to managing current relationships, she is integral in investor outreach. Shannon brings nearly 10 years of real estate development and legal experience to the firm. Prior to joining, Shannon managed all aspects of development across multiple asset types for a boutique firm and spearheaded investor relations. Shannon’s experience includes over 6 years of practicing at top-tier, international law firms such as Arnold & Porter and Clifford Chance LLP. She specialized in the Real Estate Group and has a comprehensive understanding of real estate transactions having represented lenders, borrowers, developers and funds. Her deals included representing the lender syndicate on the first gaming facility in NYC, the purchasers of Forest City Ratner Companies’ retail portfolio and the borrower in the refinancing of the Standard Hotel. She is known for her interpersonal and persuasive communication skills, aptitude for reducing broad concepts into focused, actionable items and her sharp instinct. Prior to Clifford Chance, Shannon served as a Special Assistant District Attorney in Kings County. Shannon received her law degree from Fordham University School of Law and her B.A. in Spanish and Economics from Fordham University.
Jenna Segal joins Silverback, with a strong real estate law background at Levy Tolman LLP as an Associate Attorney. Strategically positioned to transition to business side of real estate, Jenna’s former practice was spent focusing on litigation and transaction, working with landlord/developers as well as administrative law in the HPD/DHCR due diligence review process. Coupled with her passion for art and design, she is an asset to the team for both contracts and design & construction. Jenna earned her Juris Doctor degree from Hofstra Law, was the founding member of the Disaster Recovery Clinic at Hofstra and attended CUNY- Hunter for her undergraduate degree.
Ryan Spiegel is a recent graduate from The University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Science in International Political Economics and Development. Before joining Silverback, Ryan has worked with a leading team at Jones Lang LaSalle representing some of New York's largest developers and commercial tenants. He has also spent time working at Related's residential brokerage firm, CORE, in their Manhattan and Brooklyn offices.
A Los Angeles native and recent graduate of Tulane University, Dylan Angarella possesses a BSM in Management with a minor in Real Estate. During his college career, Dylan competed for Tulane in their Division I Track & Field program, running the 200m and 400m. Dylan joined the company with previous real estate private equity experience after interning for the Energy and Real Estate divisions of GPB Capital Holdings in the Summer of 2017.
Lauren brings more than 30 years experience to her role as controller for Silverback Development where she is in charge of all real estate development, construction and management accounting.
Prior to joining the team, Lauren held dual roles at The Clarett Group, LLC where she served as controller for the firm’s development, construction and management accounting in addition to handling all reporting requirements and the administration of insurance policies and legal documents. Additionally, she was the MIS director.
She also ran a successful accounting and systems consulting firm of her own from 1992-1999 and spent 10 years as MIS director and controller at Park Tower Realty Corp.
Jesse Garrett comes to Silverback from a national development firm and the private equity arm of a Fortune 100 company. At Silverback, he is responsible for evaluating new acquisition opportunities and supporting the progression of the firm's deep development pipeline. The firm is an ideal platform for Jesse to apply his critical thinking, drive, and passion for the built environment. He holds a B.A. in Financial Economics from Columbia College, Columbia University.
